According to a recent scientific study from the University of Illinois, there is a strong relation between Yerba Mate and colon cancer treatment. The bioactive compounds contained in just one cup of Yerba Mate tea, in fact, showed to be effective in destroying colon cancer cells, as well as extremely anti-inflammatory – an important fact in itself since inflammation favours the progression of cancer.
In South America Mate tea is an ancient traditional beverage that is enjoyed as much today as ever. Dating back to pre-Columbian Paraguay, it was used by the Guaranì people for its medicinal properties and later, in the 16th Century, adopted by the Spanish colony of Paraguay, from where its popularity gradually spread to other South American countries.
Yerba Mate contains caffeine (more than black tea, less than coffee), but it is also high in antioxidants and contains the minerals potassium, magnesium and manganese.
